Here we go again… another thriller.
For someone that practically flies back into bed after using the toilet at 2am, in case there’s someone waiting around the corner, and jumps at the sound of literally anything; you’d think I’d lay off the sinister, serial killer books – right?
The book takes place in Exeter, England and gives the investigative account of DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles, as they hunt for a twisted serial killer that likes to date his victims before he kills them.
Meanwhile, Connor, a new and withdrawn boy to town – looking for a fresh start, finds himself in the spotlight as he’s grasped by popularity. Wanting to appear ‘normal’ but hoping not to get mixed up with the wrong crowd, like he did back home in California, Connor has to make sure that nobody finds out who he really is.
The first page places you in a really uncomfortable position.
You’ve read the blurb, so you already know what’s about to go down, only the character that we’re first introduced to doesn’t so, it’s daunting to read the horror that soon unfolds.
With books of this genre, a fast pace needs to be set – anything less tends to make the book boresome and a struggle to get into, as you crave some form of action in every chapter. Luckily, this book was anything but a big yawn, and I genuinely felt immersed in the plot, often finding myself squealing as we (yes, I became a detective too) edged closer and closer to who the perpetrator really was.
I believe that the plot was written and developed very well, and I loved how all of the different perspectives were explored and lead to the shocking ending.
The only thing that I wished was different, was if we got to read from the actual killer’s perspective, and find out more about the truth behind his motive. Don’t get me wrong, the ending was equally good despite, but if you’ve read the book yourself, you’ll understand what I mean (I can’t explain without spoiling it!).
This isn’t the first book by Katerina Diamond that I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last as this book is part of a series! It was great from start to finish but as I said above, I wish we could’ve got that extra perspective.
Katerina Diamond is the author of the Sunday Times Best Selling Exeter based crime thriller series – starting with The Teacher and followed by The Secret, The Angel, The Promise and Truth or Die . Katerina is currently working on her seventh novel which is a standalone.
